If this is your first visit with a Naturopathic Doctor, you may be curious about what makes it different from a visit with a medical doctor. While it is well understood that Naturopathic doctors primarily use natural therapies when treating patients, they also have a unique approach to healthcare. Click here for more information about Naturopathic medicine.
The first difference is that Dr. Mitchell will spend an hour or more with you on your initial visit as she tries to understand your health problems and how they are related to each other and to your life and your background. Her focus is on you and your health, not on disease.
Our bodies are made to react to all the insults life throws at us so as to maintain our health. This is called homeostasis or dynamic balance. If you are approaching or have reached the limits of what your body knows how to deal with, then symptoms related to every new challenge may result in poorer health.
Dr. Mitchell will help you improve your health using treatments and lifestyle changes that you help design and implement. Her goal is to understand you as a whole person and what factors in your life (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) are not allowing you to be well. She will also teach you and guide you in how to maintain your health.
On the first visit, Dr. Mitchell will listen to your story and look at any records or previously prescribed medication or supplements that you bring with you. She will ask a lot of questions about your past & present health conditions. She will perform any necessary physical exams and order lab work if it is warranted.
Return visits are typically 30 minutes in length and can be a follow-up to a previous office visit or for established patients to see the doctor for a new health concern. If you and the doctor have discussed treatments they will be done on each visit; NET, NAET, AAT, Cranial Body Balancing, etc. Dr. Mitchell has found in her many years of practice that supplements or herbs are wonderful therapies but sometimes inadequate to encourage deep change in the body. The body often has to be encouraged to release past patterns in order to shift into health.
For many years Dr. Mitchell focused on health care for women and she is considered an expert practitioner in the field of natural and alternative medicine for women. She is successful with people who have experienced physical and emotional trauma, those who wish to explore the underlying causes of disease and dysfunction, and with people who have not achieved their goals with other therapies. She considers it a privilege to work with children and babies.
Dr. Mitchell also works with bioenergetic medicine, using kinesiology when appropriate to tap into the body's innate intelligence. She is proficient in Dr. Nambruidipad's NAET, and Advanced Allergy Technique (AAT) to desensitize allergies. She is able to address the myriad factors associated with sinusitis, chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, digestive disorders like IBS, and even problems like arthritis, asthma and other chronic inflammatory disorders eliminating the need for long term supplements or medication. When appropriate, she uses deep acting therapies to address the emotional or ancestral influences on our health.
What do I need to bring to a first visit?
Bring the bottles of any herbs, supplements, & medications that you are taking, and reports from any recent lab work. Write out a health history or a time line if it helps you to remember the details of your health concerns. Please download the new patient forms on this web site.
